Ivan Balasuriya
Head of English Faculty

Taking both global and local language needs into consideration, we have introduced numerous courses in order to upgrade students’ English language skills.

Elementary English (CSWE I) focuses on the development of students’ basic communication skills for educational and social needs.

Intermediate English (CSWE II) develops communication and language skills to a level where students can function effectively in an English speaking environment.

Upper Intermediate English (CSWEIII) builds language skills necessary for participation in a wide range of social and vocational activities. During this course some work on English for Academic Purposes is introduced.

English for Academic Purposes (CSWE IV) develops all language skills with an emphasis on skills relevant to tertiary study. Essay and report writing, note-taking, preparation for tutorials, strategies for effective listening and understanding lectures, undertaking research, discussion and oral presentations are included in this course.

As part of their course, students participate in educational excursions enabling them to visit some of the local areas of beauty and interest, such as beaches, museums, Melbourne Zoo and Lorne.

Courses are taught by fully qualified and experienced teachers of English as a Foreign and Second Language, many of whom have taught in a variety of Asian and European countries and understand the challenges and delights of living and studying in a foreign country. The teachers use the communicative method and incorporate elements of other theories of second language learning and acquisition in their lessons so that students develop language skills to participate actively in situations where the language of communication is English.
